Beautiful 1949 Willys Overland Jeepster. RESTOMOD This vehicle was modded (or) customized in the late 70's (or early 80's) by the Shriner's organization. At that time the original drive line was converted over to a FORD 289 engine, a C4 automatic transmission, and an 8 inch rear end from a 1968 mustang. The Shriner organization converted dozens (maybe hundreds) of these vehicles back then to be used as parade cars. Obviously the conversion was done well, as it is still running great today. This conversion started out as a very solid vehicle as the paint is still in great condition with relatively few flaws or issues. I am sure that being a parade car helped, as it was most likely garaged during the off season, and rarely if ever driven in bad weather...
I have owned the vehicle for going on 3 years, and since my purchase, there have been a slew of upgrades that make the car more drive able and SAFER to operate at today's highway speeds. Some of them are included below.
SAFETY ADDITIONS:
Power steering (electric) ,
New WWW radial tires,
Power brakes, DISC'S on the front,
Newer steering box,
New Painless wire kit, front to back,
New brake lines and hoses,
New trans and fuel lines,
New trans filter and gasket,
OTHER ADDITIONS:
NEW convertible top,
New top material side curtains, along with removable plexiglass windows,
Newer interior, no rips or tears,
Replaced most gauges, they all work now,
New radio and speakers,
Tilt steering column,
Wood rim steering wheel,
Radio with bluetooth,
Edelbrock Carb and manifold,
New choke cable,
New heat shut off valve,
New exhaust, BRAND NEW exhaust manifolds
I am sure I am forgetting a lot of things, but you get the idea. This vehicle will now run down the highway at 65 to 70 MPH, where originally the top speed was less than 50 MPH.
The car stops GREAT with the power disc brakes, (as well as my everyday cars), The power steering is a great addition as the non power was really hard to turn.
This car and driveline are very solid, there is no smoke, no engine noise, and the transmission shifts very well. It should give someone many, many years of pleasurable driving.
I am not one that likes to modify vehicles just to do so, in fact I think a nice original vehicle should be kept just that way. HOWEVER, this car was already converted beyond taking back to original by the people that replaced the drive line. BUT, I have to admit that I have driven both an original Jeepster and this one, I would much rather drive this one as it is much easier to drive, and MUCH SAFER.
