Title: Local Computer / Email / Network Help Wanted — Germantown Area
My main goal is to get away from Scammy Godaddy, who had been fleecing me $300 a year, for something that should probably cost $50 per year. I have a business and a personal domain (steveolsen.net) and some emails that I need to make sure not to lose any data, as these are business records.
Looking for a capable local computer/network guy for a small transition project at my home/shop in Germantown, WI.
Computer techs from Germantown, Menomonee Falls, Richfield, West Bend, Jackson, Hartford area are ideal. But qualified, time efficient help can come from anywhere. Local is better though, as on site support is going to be part of it. If you are thinking 100% remote....you are thinking of someone else's setup, not mine.
This is not a big corporate IT project. I’m looking for a practical, hands-on person who can help clean up a few real-world computer, email, domain, printer, backup, and network issues without turning it into a monthly managed-service sales pitch.
Project may include:
• Moving domain/email services away from GoDaddy where practical
• Setting up Proton Mail with custom domains / aliases
• Checking DNS records: MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TXT records
• Reviewing current cPanel email situation before changing anything
• Helping organize local/offsite backup strategy using 5 TB drives
• Basic Synology / Windows file backup sanity check, Hyperbackup
• Printer and local network troubleshooting
• VPN/LAN issues, especially Proton VPN local network access
• Input Director startup / local PC-to-PC control setup
• General Windows 10/11 cleanup and practical troubleshooting
'Lorex security camera experience a plus, but not necessary.
I have a home/shop setup, multiple PCs, printers, Synology NAS, domains, email accounts, and a preference for simple, robust solutions. I do not want cloud-only answers or unnecessary subscriptions.
Looking for someone who:
• Has real experience with Windows networking, email, DNS, and backups
• Understands domains and email records, not just “restart the router”
• Can explain what they are changing before changing it, although I have done some Python coding, and often find myself on the CMD line....I consider myself an amateur computer guy.
• Is careful with business email and domain settings
• Is comfortable working onsite
• Brings a laptop and basic tools if needed
• Is practical, direct, and not trying to sell a managed IT contract
Pay:
$40/hour cash to start, depending on experience. Higher possible for the right person if you are efficient and know what you are doing. This can me an ongoing relationship, but I am not looking for a $300 monthly support type of relationship.
This is probably 6 to 10 hours initially, with possible additional work later if it goes well.
Please reply with:
1. Your general location, I want to understand drive time, so this makes sense for you and me.
2. Your experience with domains, DNS, email migration, Proton Mail, cPanel, or Microsoft/Google email
3. Your Windows/networking experience
4. Your hourly rate, see mine
5. When you are available
6. Whether you can work onsite near Germantown area
No big company sales pitch, please. Looking for a sharp local tech who can help get this system migrated over, and cleaned up properly.
