About the author & his work: Making faces and dolls from apples is a tradition, he told the Tribune in a 1965 interview, that goes back to the Seneca Indians and residents of southern Appalachia. "He developed it on a very sophisticated level," his wife, Rona, said. "It all started accidentally when he was visiting his mother in the hospital. He carved a face in an apple and it was very good. He subsequently perfected a technique using an epoxy resin coating that has continued to preserve many of them for more than 25 years."
