Montessori...perhaps I shouldn't put that into the description of my daycare until I do even more research into it. I have been reading and researching very much about Montessori methods, though, and believe that my daycare fits I would say 75% of the (unofficial rules) of a Montessori daycare. I do appreciate your noting that I truly do put a lot of time, energy, money, and love into my daycare and do all that I can to make the daycare that I would choose to send my girls(had I the need for child care) But as someone else had pointed out (thanks, again!) not all Montessori daycares are completely alike.
Though I would LOVE to have wooden tables, chairs, shelves, etc...it is outside of our financial ability at the moment. We do have an actual savings fund, though, specifically for that. Also, we have traditional toys as well as Montessori toys (again, budgeting and buying as we can) but I try to have the kids play with them as they would pertain to either practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, science, geography and culture, and the arts.
I try to give the kids a lot of independence, material, praise and subtle guidance as I can to spark their curiousity and their imagination. I also realize that Montessori daycares often often have no sort of daily schedule. I have some mixed feelings regarding that. In fact, my husband attended a Montessori school until high school and shared with me how absolutely difficult it was for him to adapt to high school as he had only ever been self-directed and school became very frustrating to him. I do think that kids also do well with some daily familiarity, some routine. We do not follow the schedule to a T by any means...if the kids are all engaged and focused on an activity I will not interrupt them. I try to give the kids as much decision-making power as possible and follow their lead. I also try, by example and by redirection, to instill respect for themselves, others, and their environment.
If after having read this you'd like to give me your feedback I wouldn't mind. Is this Montessori? Is it not? I have no problem taking the word from my title...it's a word In order to judge the daycare itself, I guess you would have to visit and see our home, meet our family...
My postsI think the effort I put into my ads reflects the effort I put into making my daycare a great place overall. I post them often because 1. it is free :) 2. If someone decides to start looking for care the day after I post and doesn't search through posts from days before they obviously would not see my post and 3. because I get responses! I've had someone write me a rather harsh email stating that I must run a terrible daycare because I continue to post and don't fill my openings. Though that perception is understandable, the truth is that not only do I set up an interview to give someone the chance to see if myself and my family would be a great match for them...but vice versa! This is my home and I have 2 young children and in my position I do have the ability to choose a family that I feel holds the same values as I do regarding their children. I am in the interviewing process and will be filling the spots that I have...and soon enough you'll no longer see my ads :)
My rate and policy I charge 5.00/hr for infants and 4.00/hr for toddlers and up. 6.00/hr for drop-in and weekend care. When my husband and I go out for a night away our 15 year old neighbor charges 10.00 AN HOUR!!! My husband and I don't go out that often and when we do we just shake our heads and laugh and think how? How is that possible? Where are her credentials!? :) :) I have lowered my rates recently after having done some research into the rates that people charge in my immediate area. I also have checked some of the places out for myself.
When all is said and done...I feel that what I charge for the care that kids receive...is a very fair rate. (I also claim on taxes) I do offer a discount for families with more than one child. As far as holidays...I ask for 3 of the (typically 7) paid holidays a year and 1 week of vacation. I feel that that is very fair. As for sick days, you can check my references to find out what a minuscule issue this is as there is always back up care available. In short...do I have a daycare for the money? Yes. I request that you do not pay with peanuts or monopoly money. If money were NO issue to our family, I wouldn't be listing ads for child care, and I would be at Disney World right now spoiling my kids like crazy. :)Am I ONLY in this for the money? Absolutely not! My girls adore what we do and think that they are the luckiest kids ever to get to have a big play groups at their home everyday!!! I do this, first, for my girls. Secondly, I do this for me. I have always wanted to teach and had started going to school for elementary education. I have a passion for teaching kids and take pride in playing a part in their "growing up" process. And third, I do it to help provide for our family while able to stay at home with my girls.
In conclusion...I will be taking the forbidden "M" word from my post for the time being as not to offend anyone. I didn't include it as some sort of sales tactic by any means...but I will continue learning more and transforming my daycare using Montessori methods. If you have been keeping track of the # of posts I've had for a month, either you are having a really, really hard time finding child care or you are a provider. I would think the latter would be true in which case your energy could be better spent focusing on what you can do to better your facility rather than belittling others. And finally, my rates are my rates and it is up to parents to tour my home and decide if they feel that what I charge is worth the quality of care and the education their kids would get here. I have absolutely no hard feelings toward anyone as everyone is entitled to have opinions and speak their mind. We have three children. The girls are 4 and almost 2 and our little boy is a newborn.
We are looking for someone to provide age appropriate play, taking the children for walks (weather permitting) and able to provide them with a light dinner. Must be comfortable/knowledgable in preparing breastmilk for baby.
