Turtles are easy to care for. In the spring, summer, and fall you just have to feed them every day (I just used frozen green beans, broccoli florets, and carrots) and change their water once a week.
In the winter they hibernate, so you can probably feed/change the water once a month.
This setup is for a turtle that is primarily aquatic, but most turtles can be on land for short amounts of time as well.
Turtles are low enough maintenance that kids can easily start learning about responsibility and biology.
